- There are so many, but I think the one that stands out is he one from my first event in 2003.
I had just finished the second run at Hallett in the Stock 03 Evo VIII and a local guy in a Z06 pulled up and came over to ask me about the "hot new evo." After learning it was stock, that we had sponsorship from a dealer and all we had this conversation:
"What kind of lap times did you run?" he asked.
"My best single lap was a 1:30.4," I answered.
"Woah.. you ran a 1:30.4 in that," he said, "I have only run a 1:31 in the Z06."
Then he looked at the car a bit, and when he saw the tires a flash of brightness came over his face and he said, "Ah, street tires, what kind of tires were you running?"
I paused, looked at him and said, "Those. We have to run those, it's part of the competition."
His jaw opened a little, and with a tone of dejection in his voice he said, "My 1:31 was with r-compounds, I only ran 1:34s with the street tires on it, and you did it on streets," and then he paused, and he said, "Well wait, you obviously know the track really well, how many laps do you have here?"
"Now," I said, "I have seven."
By the look on his face I don't think I could have hurt him more if I kicked him in the stomach, and the fact was I finished 20th in that run, the top car 34 seconds ahead of me. I think that was the first time I realized just how fast the front of this pack is, and how the front 30 or so could go to any track day in the country and collect point-bys from the locals in the first session. It really is impressive how competitive and fast the One Lap of America drivers can be.

A 2008 TireRack Cannonball One Lap of America Preview
It’s the time of year again where about 175 members of the church of the car make a pilgrimage to South Bend, Indiana for a week of sleep deprivation, vibration and noise known as the TireRack Cannonball One Lap of America.
